A Utah man, 56-year-old Steven Ray Johnson, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in leading a massive methamphetamine trafficking ring.
According to court documents, Johnson was the mastermind behind the operation, which brought in millions of dollars in methamphetamine shipments from Mexico. The ring was responsible for distributing the deadly substance in Utah and other parts of the country.
During a recent hearing in the District Court for the District of Utah, Johnson was convicted on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, as well as other related counts. The court also ordered him to pay $2.5 million in restitution.
Prosecutors say Johnson’s operation was one of the largest methamphetamine trafficking rings in the region’s history, with ties to Mexican cartels.
Johnson’s lawyer argued for a lighter sentence, citing his client’s cooperation with law enforcement and his lack of prior convictions. However, the judge ultimately sided with prosecutors, saying Johnson’s role in the operation was too significant to ignore.
Johnson’s sentencing comes as part of a broader effort by federal authorities to crack down on methamphetamine trafficking in the region. In recent years, the number of methamphetamine-related arrests and seizures has skyrocketed, with many cases linked to Mexican cartels.
