Robert Elias Padilla, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, California 2018

Vacaville man Robert Elias Padilla, 41, is headed to federal prison for 14 years after being caught red-handed trying to ditch more than 5.5 pounds of methamphetamine during a police pursuit. The sentence, handed down Thursday by U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley, marks the end of a high-speed, high-stakes escape attempt that ended with a backpack full of crystal meth sitting in a Vacaville parking lot.

Padilla pleaded guilty on January 31 to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. According to court documents, on June 6, 2018, law enforcement agents had a warrant to search Padilla and his vehicle for evidence tied to drug trafficking and firearms. They tracked him down and followed as he drove to a parking lot in Vacaville—where surveillance ended, and chaos began.

When officers moved to stop his vehicle, Padilla didn’t comply. Instead, he slammed the gas, attempted to flee, and rammed into a parked car. In the middle of the scramble, he hurled a backpack out the driver’s-side window. Officers recovered the bag moments later and found more than 5.5 pounds of meth stashed inside—enough to supply a small army of addicts for months.

Padilla was apprehended at the scene, still behind the wheel. On his person, investigators found over $2,300 in cash—untraceable, unexplained, and consistent with drug trade proceeds. The combination of bulk narcotics, flight behavior, and cash sealed his fate long before sentencing.

The case was built by the Vacaville Police Department, with critical support from the FBI’s Solano County Violent Crimes Task Force and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities say the bust disrupted a major distribution channel feeding the region’s growing meth epidemic.

U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott, announcing the outcome, emphasized that possession for distribution at this scale carries severe consequences. “Fourteen years is a hard fall,” Scott said. “But when you’re moving five pounds of meth, you’re not just a user—you’re a supplier. And this is where suppliers end up.”
