A California man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking operation that mailed pounds of the deadly drug from California to Iowa.
Alan Sanchez, 32, of San Jacinto, California, pleaded guilty on October 23, 2023 to one count of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, and was subsequently sentenced to 76 months in federal prison by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.
Sanchez’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program of the United States Department of Justice, which includes the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force.
The DEA Task Force consists of the DEA, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Marion Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
As part of his sentence, Sanchez must also serve a five-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep prosecuted the case, which involved Sanchez mailing packages containing numerous pounds of methamphetamine on behalf of the drug trafficking organization.
The case highlights the ongoing threat of methamphetamine trafficking in the United States, and the importance of interagency cooperation in combating this deadly crime.
