Vance Cayford, 47, Sentenced to 70 Months for Gun and Ammunition Charges
Bangor, Maine – Vance Cayford, a 47-year-old Norridgewock man, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison and three years of supervised release for possession of ammunition and attempted possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to court records, on May 29, 2016, state troopers went to the defendant’s residence to investigate a domestic disturbance. Cayford, who had previous Maine felony convictions for domestic violence assault and illegal possession of a firearm, attempted to take a state trooper’s rifle during the investigation.
During a search of Cayford’s residence, 92 rounds of .45-caliber ammunition were recovered. The defendant was prohibited from possessing ammunition and firearms due to his previous convictions.
The investigation was conducted by the Maine State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer.
U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank announced the sentencing, which was handed down by Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. Cayford had previously pleaded guilty to the charges on November 3, 2017.
The PSN program, reinvigorated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2017, brings together law enforcement agencies and local communities to develop effective strategies to reduce violent crime.
Cayford’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing gun and ammunition-related crimes, particularly for those with prior convictions.
