SEATTLE – A 24-year-old ex-resident of Vancouver, Washington, has been handed a 21-year prison term for producing explicit images of child sexual abuse, according to U.S. Attorney Nick Brown. The sentence, announced in U.S. District Court in Tacoma, is concurrent with a previous 20-year sentence imposed by Clark County Superior Court.
Identified as Kaleb Michael Scott, the defendant had been entrusted with an infant’s care in 2021. His downfall began when a Snapchat user uploaded images of child molestation, leading to his eventual capture. Scott had relocated to Utah by then but left his phone with relatives in Vancouver. A forensic examination turned up 34 images of sexual abuse against an infant, along with Google search terms indicative of child sexual abuse content.
Assistant United States Attorney Hillary Stuart argued for the harsh sentence, noting, ‘The defendant horrifically abused his position as a trusted caregiver and preyed upon the infant. He not only abused the child but also disseminated images of the abuse online, where they will live on forever.’
Chief U.S. District Judge David G. Estudillo characterized Scott’s actions as ‘despicable’ during the sentencing hearing, adding that the defendant used his personal relationships to gain access to vulnerable victims and recorded his own criminal behavior. Scott is required to register as a sex offender upon release from prison and will be on lifetime supervised release.
Investigation of the case was conducted by the Digital Evidence Cybercrime Unit of the Vancouver Police Department, while Assistant United States Attorney Hillary Stuart prosecuted the case.
