Randolph Varbelow, a 48-year-old former United States Postal Service contract mail carrier from Jacksonville, has been sentenced to time served, approximately four months’ imprisonment, for his role in the theft of mail matter.
According to court documents, Varbelow pleaded guilty to theft of mail matter on November 15, 2022. United States District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan handed down the sentence, which also includes a two-year term of supervised release and restitution to the victims.
Varbelow worked as a contract mail carrier from November 2021 through January 2022, delivering mail on a route in Duval and St. Johns Counties. However, his tenure was cut short when the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General launched an investigation into complaints about missing mail on his route.
The investigation linked Varbelow to multiple stolen Target gift cards through transaction records and surveillance video. This evidence was crucial in building a case against the former contract mail carrier, who ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David B. Mesrobian. The sentence handed down by Judge Corrigan reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need to hold those responsible for theft of mail matter accountable.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of trust in the postal service and the need for accountability among those responsible for delivering mail. The U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General plays a critical role in investigating cases of mail theft and bringing perpetrators to justice.
In this case, the investigation and prosecution demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to protecting the integrity of the postal service and ensuring that those who violate that trust are held accountable. As a result of the investigation and prosecution, Varbelow has been brought to justice and will serve a term of supervised release, providing an opportunity for rehabilitation and reflection on his actions.
