Abielemelec Vega, Heroin and Fentanyl Conspiracy, Ohio 2024

CLEVELAND, OH – Two Northeast Ohio brothers are trading street corners for prison cells after being sentenced for a heroin and fentanyl conspiracy that continued even after one of their customers fatally overdosed. Abiemelec Vega, 26, of Cleveland, and Mizraim Vega, 28, of South Euclid, each received six years in federal prison – 74 months for Abiemelec and 72 months for Mizraim – following a guilty verdict on multiple drug charges.

Acting U.S. Attorney David A. Sierleja and Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland Office, announced the sentences Friday, stemming from a 2016 investigation that exposed a pipeline of deadly narcotics flowing from Connecticut into Ohio. The brothers were convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin, acetylfentanyl, and fentanyl, as well as multiple counts of distribution of the same substances.

Court documents paint a chilling picture of the Vega brothers’ operation. Abiemelec Vega, identified as a member of the Latin Kings gang, allegedly leveraged connections within the gang to secure large shipments of heroin and fentanyl. On August 26, 2016, the brothers reportedly moved 80 grams of heroin for a cool $8,000. But it wasn’t just about profit. A text message from Mizraim Vega revealed a disturbing awareness of the potency – and danger – of their product: “The one thing I’ll tell is to make sure to cut it (dilute the heroin). That stuff…you can’t send it to the street like that, it’s too strong. That stuff could kill someone, bro!”

And kill someone it did. Just days later, on September 3, 2016, Abiemelec Vega informed a source he was ditching his phone, admitting that someone had died from heroin or fentanyl he had sold. Despite this knowledge – and the clear risk of further deaths – the brothers continued their drug trafficking activities, prioritizing profit over human life. The callous disregard for the consequences of their actions didn’t go unnoticed by the court.

The investigation, spearheaded by the FBI, revealed the depth of the Vega brothers’ involvement in the regional drug trade. Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Sweeney skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting damning evidence that ultimately led to the convictions and subsequent prison sentences. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of fentanyl and heroin on communities across the country, and the ruthless individuals who profit from addiction and death.

The Vega brothers’ sentences send a clear message: those who flood our streets with poison and show no remorse for the lives destroyed will face the full weight of the law. While six years isn’t a cure for the opioid crisis, it’s a step towards holding accountable those responsible for fueling it. The FBI continues to investigate related leads and expects further arrests in the coming months.
