ATLANTA – In a stunning betrayal of the public trust, former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier Vershun Weaver has pleaded guilty to stealing government treasury checks and committing fraud through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 33-year-old Atlanta native admitted to taking U.S. Treasury checks from recipients on his mail route. One check, valued at $2,500, and another for $1,500, were recovered after a fellow postal employee discovered Weaver’s wallet containing them. Further investigation revealed additional stolen mail pieces addressed to other victims, along with evidence of Weaver’s fraudulent PPP loan application.
‘Weaver’s actions are an affront to the integrity of public service,’ said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, emphasizing the importance of trust in mail carriers. ‘We will not tolerate such breaches and continue to work with federal partners to ensure accountability for those who violate the public trust.’
According to court documents, Weaver submitted a fraudulent income tax document to secure his PPP loan, which he used to purchase personal items. The scheme was uncovered when a postal supervisor found the stolen checks in Weaver’s wallet.
Sentencing is set for February 9, 2026, before U.S. District Judge Tiffany R. Johnson. Weaver faces charges including making a false statement to the Small Business Administration and two counts of theft of mail by a Postal Service employee.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, with assistance from the Small Business Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dwayne A. Brown, Jr., is handling the prosecution.
