Veterinary Manager Dosed on Deceit
Crystal Windham, a 41-year-old Summerfield woman and former practice manager for a veterinary clinic in Ocala, has pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain hydrocodone by fraud, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.
According to court documents, Windham purchased more than 21,000 hydrocodone tablets from a pharmacy in Summerfield between July 2020 and May 2023. She used forged prescriptions from two veterinarians to acquire the drugs, many of which were for deceased pets or animals that had never been prescribed hydrocodone by the veterinary practice.
The scheme unraveled on May 9, 2023, when Windham attempted to fill a fraudulent prescription for hydrocodone at the pharmacy. She was stopped before completing the transaction and subsequently admitted the scheme to law enforcement.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration with assistance from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tyrie K. Boyer.
Windham’s actions are a stark reminder of the dangers of prescription fraud and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and communities. Her guilty plea is a significant step towards holding her accountable for her crimes.
The investigation and prosecution of Windham’s case demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors to combating prescription fraud and ensuring public safety.
As Windham awaits sentencing, she faces the reality of her actions and the harm they caused. Her case serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of honest and responsible behavior, particularly in positions of trust and authority.
