Pittsburgh Woman Sentenced to Prison for Stealing Funds
A suburban Pittsburgh resident has been sentenced to 24 months of incarceration for stealing funds from her former employer, Gateway Packaging Corporation. Victoria Mazur, 54, of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, was convicted of wire fraud, a federal crime that involves the unauthorized use of electronic means to defraud individuals or businesses.
According to court documents, Mazur, who served as the Controller for Gateway Packaging Corporation, issued herself and her husband a total of approximately 189 fraudulent credit card refunds, totaling $195,063.80, through the company’s point of sale terminal from December 2012 until December 2017. The thefts were so extensive that they caused the failure of the company, which is now out of business.
To conceal her fraud, Mazur supplied the owners with false financial statements that understated the company’s true sales figures. The scheme was uncovered and Mazur was subsequently charged and convicted of wire fraud.
Senior United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose imposed the sentence on Mazur, which includes 24 months of incarceration, followed by 3 years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down on an unspecified date in 2023 in the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
The U.S. government commended the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and the United States Postal Inspection Service for their role in the investigation that led to Mazur’s conviction.
Assistant United States Attorney Lee J. Karl prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The case is a reminder of the importance of corporate accountability and the need for businesses to maintain robust internal controls to prevent employee theft and other forms of corruption.
