MIAMI – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida has filed a staggering $11 million lawsuit against two medical equipment companies accused of bilking Medicare out of tens of millions. Vida Med Center LLC and Med-Union Medical Center, Inc., both enrolled as Medicare providers, are alleged to have defrauded the program by over $33 million combined.
According to court documents, Vida Med submitted $14,110,820 in fraudulent claims and received $8,759,036.68 in reimbursements. Med-Union’s tally was even more staggering with $19,044,516.07 in false claims resulting in $14,167,792.92 in payments. The entire sum of Med-Union’s paid Medicare claims was based on prescriptions from a single provider. The civil forfeiture actions aim to recover $967,760.37 and $10,014,325.40 respectively, representing the proceeds of this fraud.
U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne; Acting Special Agent in Charge Jesus Barranco of HHS-OIG Miami Regional Office; and Special Agent in Charge Brett D. Skiles of the FBI Miami Field Office jointly announced the charges. The investigation into these cases is being led by FBI Miami and HHS-OIG.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Marx P. Calderón and Joshua Paster are prosecuting these civil actions on behalf of the Southern District of Florida. It’s important to note that a civil forfeiture complaint is merely an accusation, and the defendants are innocent until proven guilty in court.
