Vine Janis, 39, Fails to Register as Sex Offender, Sentenced to Prison
A 39-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced to prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Vine Janis was convicted of the crime and sentenced to 4 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Janis was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 12, 2019, and pled guilty on August 12, 2019. He was previously convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in June 2001 and is required to register as a sex offender. However, between April 1, 2018, and June 18, 2018, Janis did not update his sex offender registration.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case. Janis was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after his sentencing.
According to court records, Janis updated the sex offender registry on February 7, 2018, to an address in Cherry Creek, South Dakota. However, a compliance officer found that Janis had moved out of the residence on May 31, 2018. Janis was later found residing at another address, but he did not register as a sex offender or update his registration.
The failure to register as a sex offender is a serious crime that can have severe consequences. Janis’ sentence serves as a reminder of the importance of compliance with sex offender registration laws.
The case is a stark reminder that law enforcement agencies are actively working to ensure that sex offenders comply with registration requirements. The U.S. Marshals Service played a key role in investigating the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller’s prosecution ensured that Janis was held accountable for his actions.
The sentencing of Vine Janis serves as a warning to others who may be failing to register as sex offenders. The consequences of non-compliance can be severe, and law enforcement agencies will continue to work to ensure that all sex offenders are registered and held accountable.
