Violent Brooklyn Robbery Crew Leader Sentenced to Life

Brooklyn, NY – A notorious Brooklyn gang leader, Christian John, and his accomplice, Marvin Johnson, were sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in a violent robbery crew that terrorized the Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and East New York areas of Brooklyn for over a decade.

The convictions, handed down in December 2014, stemmed from charges of racketeering, murder, attempted murder, murder-for-hire, armed robbery, narcotics distribution, and gambling on dog fighting. The sentences were announced by Robert L. Capers, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who praised the efforts of the FBI and New York City Police Department in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“Today’s sentence marks a day of closure for the six families whose loved ones were senselessly murdered and for the Brooklyn communities where John and his violent crew wreaked havoc from more than a decade,” said U.S. Attorney Capers. “These life sentences also provide notice to gang members and violent offenders that this Office and our law enforcement partners will be relentless in our efforts to make communities safe for their residents.”

The convicted men were found guilty of multiple murders, including the 2000 murder of Charlemagne Lormand, the 2008 murders of Barry Haynes and Daquane Shelton, and the 2011 murders of Jason Bostic and Aaron Formey. Both defendants were also found guilty of the 2006 murder of Earle Kevin Obermuller, who was duct-taped, suffocated, and set on fire in an abandoned building.

During the sentencing proceeding before United States District Judge Frederic Block, prosecutors highlighted the defendants’ brutal crimes, including the assault of a crew member by tying him up and pouring scalding water over his body as retaliation for being disloyal. The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Soumya Dayananda and Robert T. Polemeni.

The convictions and sentences serve as a warning to gang members and violent offenders that law enforcement will continue to pursue justice and make communities safer. As U.S. Attorney Capers noted, “We will be relentless in our efforts to make communities safe for their residents.”

The defendants, Christian John and Marvin Johnson, will serve their life sentences in a federal prison, bringing an end to their violent reign of terror in Brooklyn.
