Viorel Pricop, Truck Arsons, California 2022
RIVERSIDE, CA – A two-year reign of fire across eight states allegedly ended with the arrest of Viorel Pricop, 64, of Allen Park, Michigan. Pricop stands accused of deliberately setting 25 semi-truck trailers ablaze, targeting a major commercial trucking company, Swift Transportation. The fires, stretching from California to Alabama, caused significant property damage and sparked a massive, multi-state investigation.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigation revealed a chilling pattern. From June 2020 to September 2022, Swift trailers were systematically targeted while parked at fuel stations and rest stops along major interstate highways – primarily I-10 and I-40. Six fires erupted in California, three in Arizona, nine in New Mexico, three in Texas, and one each in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama. Investigators noted a consistency in the method used to ignite the fires, focusing on trailer tires late at night.
The break in the case came through meticulous digital forensics. Fire investigation consultants hired by Swift Transportation flagged the similarities in the fire patterns. A GPS navigation device linked to a commercial truck was repeatedly pinpointed near the fire locations. That device, authorities allege, was installed on a vehicle owned and operated by Viorel Pricop. Further analysis of cell phone records revealed Pricop’s phone was present in the vicinity of 24 of the 25 fires.
A search of Pricop’s vehicle and residence on September 16th yielded a treasure trove of potentially incriminating evidence. Logbooks, bills of lading, shipping receipts – both paper and digital – contained location data that aligned with the dates and locations of the arsons. Investigators are now piecing together a timeline that allegedly connects Pricop to each of the fires. The US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California is leading the prosecution.
This isn’t Pricop’s first brush with the law. He was previously convicted in 2018 in the Eastern District of Michigan for transportation of stolen goods, a case where Swift Transportation also cooperated with authorities. He served two years and completed his supervised release in June 2019 – just a year before the truck arsons began. This history is undoubtedly fueling the prosecution’s case. Pricop made his initial court appearance in Detroit on Tuesday and a detention hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.
Pricop is charged with one count of arson of property in interstate commerce. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison, with a potential maximum of 20 years. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities haven’t ruled out the possibility of additional charges. As with all criminal cases, Pricop is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
