Two Virginia men have been handed extensive prison sentences for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol breach. Farhad Azari, 65, and his son Farbod Azari, 33, both of Richmond, Virginia, were sentenced to prison terms totaling over seven years each after pleading guilty to assaulting law enforcement officers with dangerous weapons during the riot.
Farhad, the elder Azari, was sentenced to 30 months in prison, followed by 24 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2000 in restitution. His son Farbod was handed a sentence of 50 months behind bars, along with the same period of supervised release and a $2000 fine.
Both men faced charges of civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon. According to court documents, they traveled to Washington, D.C., specifically to protest the certification of the Electoral College vote. Upon their arrival at the Capitol, they engaged in violent behavior, targeting police officers with water bottles, bike racks, flagpoles, and other items.
Farbod Azari was seen throwing a water bottle at police officers and later participating in dismantling the fencing around the Capitol. His father, Farhad, pushed against the police line with a bike rack after kicking it, and he also hurled a flagpole at officers. Later, he entered the Capitol through a broken window and attempted to direct other rioters towards police lines.
At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth emphasized the severity of the men’s actions during the Capitol breach and their impact on law enforcement officers who were defending the building. The Azaris’ sentences reflect the gravity of their crimes and the chaos they helped to create on one of America’s most significant days of political unrest.
The sentencing of Farhad and Farbod Azari serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in violent behavior during peaceful protests, particularly when such actions result in harm to law enforcement officers and interfere with the democratic process.
