Virginia Rioters Convicted in Jan. 6 Capitol Breach Assaults

WASHINGTON – A shocking conviction has emerged from the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach as Casey Jane Tryon-Castro and Micaiah Joseph stand guilty of heinous crimes committed against law enforcement during the historic riot.

Tryon-Castro, 34, from Roanoke, Virginia, was found guilty of four felonies, including civil disorder and robbery. She also faced convictions on four misdemeanors for her actions at the restricted Capitol grounds. Joseph, 33, from Triangle, Virginia, was convicted of two felonies and four misdemeanors in relation to the Capitol breach.

Both defendants were present during the violent siege at the ‘Tunnel,’ a focal point of the riot where officers fiercely defended their positions against rioters. Tryon-Castro is accused of participating in this assault for approximately 30 minutes, pushing officers and aiding other rioters. She forcibly took a police shield from an officer and handed it to fellow rioters. Joseph, clad in protective gear, engaged in similar tactics, using his weight against the police line and distributing equipment to others.

The FBI arrested Tryon-Castro on January 17, 2023, and Joseph on January 18, 2023. The convictions come after a federal jury in the District of Columbia found both guilty of their respective charges. U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras will determine their sentences at a later date.

This trial serves as a stark reminder of the violent nature of the Jan. 6 Capitol breach and the bravery of law enforcement officers who stood firm against the chaos.
