MINNEAPOLIS, MN – In a major blow to organized crime, a high-ranking member of the Native Mob gang was sentenced to 43 years in federal prison. Wakinyon Wakan McArthur, 36, also known as “Kon,” “Killa,” was found guilty of conspiracy and other crimes related to his leadership of the Native Mob.
McArthur, along with two co-defendants, William Earl Morris, 27, and Anthony Francis Cree, 27, was convicted by a jury on March 19, 2013, after a seven-week trial. Morris was sentenced to 35 years, while Cree received approximately 24 years.
The Native Mob is a regional criminal organization that originated in Minneapolis in the early 1990s. With an estimated 200 members, the gang is known for engaging in drug trafficking, assault, robbery, and murder. Members often wear red and black clothing or sport gang-related tattoos to signify their affiliation.
According to the 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment, the Native Mob is one of the largest and most violent Native American gangs in the U.S., with a strong presence in Minnesota and Wisconsin. McArthur and his co-defendants were found to have conspired to engage in criminal activity through the Native Mob, in violation of the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.
The investigation into the Native Mob was a long-term, cross-jurisdictional effort involving numerous local, state, federal, and tribal law enforcement agencies. The case highlights the ongoing struggle against organized crime and the importance of cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
A total of 28 defendants have been convicted or pleaded guilty in connection with the Native Mob. Sentences for these defendants range from 2 1/2 to 43 years in prison. McArthur’s sentence is a significant victory in the fight against organized crime and serves as a warning to those involved in similar activities.
