Waldemar Martínez-Ortiz, Carjacking, Puerto Rico 2017

A masked carjacker has been taken into federal custody in connection with a string of violent crimes that terrorized the residents of Puerto Rico. Waldemar Martínez-Ortiz, the suspect, faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the serious charges.

According to the FBI, the suspect has been linked to at least two violent incidents involving home invasions and carjackings. On January 31, 2017, Martínez-Ortiz allegedly broke into the home of two females, wearing a mask and carrying a silver gun. He forced the victims to hand over their valuables and then sexually assaulted them. After committing the heinous crime, he took one of their cars.

Just days later, on February 6, 2017, Martínez-Ortiz committed another home invasion in Bayamón. He brandished a firearm and forced a female to enter her home, where her brother and boyfriend were able to restrain him until police arrived.

The suspect was detained by the Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) after a lengthy investigation. The PRPD agents, detectives, and prosecutors were commended for their persistence and efforts in solving these crimes.

The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Daynelle M. Álvarez. The victims of this crime can rest assured that their rights will be zealously protected and justice will be sought.

Waldemar Martínez-Ortiz is currently under federal custody and faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted of carjacking with serious bodily injury. The exact date of the crime was January 31, 2017.
