Brazilian National Sentenced for Reentry
BOSTON – In a brazen disregard for U.S. law, Waldier Desouza-Gomes, a 35-year-old Brazilian national, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. The crime occurred despite his previous deportations on four separate occasions between 2003 and 2013.
On Dec. 12, 2016, Desouza-Gomes pleaded guilty to one count of illegal re-entry of a deported alien. This conviction marks the fifth time he has been caught and convicted of the same offense.
Between 2003 and 2013, Desouza-Gomes was deported from the United States on four occasions. However, he repeatedly chose to illegally re-enter the country, showing a blatant disregard for U.S. immigration laws.
Desouza-Gomes’ most recent deportation occurred in March 2013, but he once again illegally re-entered the United States, demonstrating a clear pattern of behavior.
After his latest conviction, Desouza-Gomes was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin to 16 months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release. Once he completes his sentence, he will be subject to deportation.
The investigation and prosecution of Desouza-Gomes’ case were led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts and Homeland Security Investigations in Boston.
Desouza-Gomes’ sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking U.S. immigration laws. The case highlights the importance of enforcing our borders and ensuring that individuals who choose to disregard our laws are held accountable.
