PITTSBURGH, PA – A Pittsburgh pharmacist is facing serious federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury for his alleged role in a widespread oxycodone distribution ring. Charles Brian Griffin, 27, formerly employed by Walgreens, is accused of conspiring to flood the streets with the highly addictive painkiller.
The one-count indictment, handed down on February 13th and unsealed today, alleges that Griffin, between March 2011 and February 2012, worked with others to illegally distribute and possess oxycodone, a Schedule II controlled substance. Federal prosecutors aren’t detailing the full scope of the conspiracy at this stage, but sources suggest the operation involved multiple individuals and a significant quantity of the drug.
This isn’t a case of a few pills slipping through the cracks. This is a calculated scheme to profit from addiction, a betrayal of the public trust expected from those entrusted with dispensing life-saving medications,” stated a source close to the investigation who wished to remain anonymous. “Pharmacists are gatekeepers, and Griffin allegedly threw open those gates for illicit gain.”
If convicted, Griffin faces a maximum total sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a staggering $1,000,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be determined by Federal Sentencing Guidelines, taking into account the severity of the offense and any prior criminal history. The government is being represented by Assistant United States Attorney Eric S. Rosen.
The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has been ongoing for months. Agents reportedly uncovered a pattern of suspicious activity at the Walgreens location where Griffin was employed, prompting a deeper dive into his prescription records and professional connections. The DEA has not released details about other potential suspects involved in the alleged conspiracy.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. Charles Brian Griffin is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He will be arraigned at a date to be determined, where he will enter a plea. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. This case underscores the ongoing opioid crisis gripping the nation and the lengths to which some individuals will go to profit from human suffering.”
