Walter Lamar Jackson, a 43-year-old inmate, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for assaulting his cellmate at the Federal Correctional Complex Coleman in Ocala, Florida.
A federal jury found Jackson guilty on January 30, 2024, of assault within the special maritime or territorial jurisdiction of the United States. The assault resulted in serious bodily harm to his cellmate.
According to testimony presented at trial, Jackson was housed in a cell with another inmate inside the facility’s special housing unit on July 15, 2021. At approximately 5:50 p.m., correctional officers responded to an emergency alarm and discovered Jackson’s cellmate lying on the floor, unconscious.
Jackson was standing over his cellmate, slamming the man’s head into the concrete floor, which resulted in severe injuries. The officers immediately stopped the assault and restrained Jackson in handcuffs.
When questioned by medical personnel, Jackson stated that he had attacked his cellmate after giving him three warnings to be quiet. This brutal assault has left the community shocked and outraged.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Hannah Nowalk and William S. Hamilton.
Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II handed down the six-year sentence to Jackson, who will serve time for his heinous crime.
