ST. LOUIS, MO – In a brutal turn of justice, Walter Wallace Jr. was handed a 25-year sentence for the December 18, 2010, murder of Michael Hayes. The tragedy unfolded in Hayes’ Alice Avenue residence where he met his fate at the hands of Wallace.
Wallace and his co-defendant, Jerry Chambers, plotted Hayes’ demise that fall. They surveilled Hayes’ home, obtaining intimate details of the property and attempting entry on several occasions. On the fateful day, Wallace entered Hayes’ home with a firearm while Chambers waited outside.
After gaining access, Wallace’s plan went awry when Hayes unexpectedly returned. A confrontation ensued, resulting in Hayes being shot by Wallace. The gunman fled the scene with Chambers after his firearm jammed mid-shootout. In the aftermath, Wallace discarded evidence at the site of the crime.
The sentence handed down by United States District Court Judge Henry E. Autrey concludes a coordinated effort between federal and local law enforcement agencies. This joint initiative has been aimed at tackling the rising tide of homicides in St. Louis.
Wallace’s fate underscores the gravity of drug-related crime and the lethal consequences that follow from illegal firearms being used in such acts. His co-defendant, Jerry Chambers, is set to face his own sentencing later this month.
