SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A significant methamphetamine operation has been disrupted in Salt Lake City, culminating in the federal indictment of Manuel Santos-Ramirez, 32, a Mexican national residing in the U.S. illegally. Santos-Ramirez is accused of possessing and intending to distribute a massive quantity of the deadly drug, fueling the addiction crisis plaguing the region.
The case, unveiled by Acting United States Attorney Felice John Viti for the District of Utah, stems from a months-long investigation by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force. Since July 2025, agents have been building a case against a larger drug trafficking organization (DTO), culminating in a controlled purchase in August. Santos-Ramirez arrived at the sting location in a silver Ford F-150 pick-up truck, immediately raising red flags.
Following the controlled buy, agents tracked Santos-Ramirez to a Salt Lake City residence. A subsequent search warrant yielded a shocking discovery: a total of 5,843 grams – over 12 pounds – of methamphetamine. Half of the haul was stashed within the pick-up truck, while the remainder was hidden inside the residence. The substance purchased during the operation also tested positive for methamphetamine, cementing the evidence against Santos-Ramirez.
Santos-Ramirez, currently in federal custody, has been formally charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. His initial appearance on the indictment was held on September 11, 2025. The wheels of justice are turning quickly, with a three-day jury trial scheduled for November 14, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 7.2 of the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse before Senior U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoups.
This bust isn’t an isolated incident. It’s a component of “Operation Take Back America,” a sweeping nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice. The operation aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and shield communities from violent crime by streamlining resources from OCDETF and Project Safe Neighborhoods. The DOJ is sending a clear message: the days of unchecked criminal activity are numbered.
Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman is leading the prosecution. It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Santos-Ramirez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the evidence presented thus far paints a grim picture, and the Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds, bringing you the unvarnished truth about the criminal underbelly of Utah and beyond.
