SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A grim chapter of Salt Lake City’s crime saga has been written as Joseph Troy Ortega, 57, from West Valley City, was slapped with federal charges following the alleged armed robbery of a Cyprus Credit Union. The 57-year-old suspect is now facing one count of credit union robbery.
The drama unfolded on August 28, 2025, when officers from the West Valley City Police Department and the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force responded to the distressing scene. According to court documents, Ortega allegedly entered the Cyprus Credit Union, demanded cash from a teller, and made his escape in a black Toyota Rav4 with an obscured license plate.
Ortega was eventually tracked down on the same day when a 2011 Rav4 registered to him was spotted nearby. During a search of the vehicle, authorities uncovered a wallet stuffed with over $2,690 in cash, along with drugs and narcotic paraphernalia. The Statewide Information Analysis Center’s facial recognition technology played a pivotal role in identifying Ortega as the suspect.
The defendant is scheduled to face his fate on November 24, 2025, when his three-day jury trial will commence before a U.S. District Court Judge at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse. The case has been jointly investigated by the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force and the West Valley City Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carlos A. Esqueda.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a sweeping nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
