Daniel Joseph Carlton, Credit Union Robbery, Utah 2014

SALT LAKE CITY – The Department of Justice’s USAO has charged Daniel Joseph Carlton, 66, of Salt Lake City, with credit union robbery in relation to the Jan. 10, 2014, heist at Transwest Credit Union.

Court documents reveal that Carlton handed a note demanding money to a teller at the credit union. With federal charges now filed, state charges against him have been dismissed. Stephen L. Nelson, Deputy District Attorney and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, will join federal prosecutors in handling the case.

The potential penalty for credit union robbery is 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Carlton’s previous convictions for bank robbery suggest he may qualify as a career offender under federal sentencing guidelines, potentially leading to an increased term of incarceration.

U.S. Attorney David B. Barlow emphasized that ‘bank robbery is a federal crime,’ with the FBI and local law enforcement agencies actively investigating such crimes in Utah. Barlow expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts in investigating and prosecuting bank robberies.

The article also covers James Pearson Thain, charged with robbing Bank of the West in Casper, Wyo., and suspected to be responsible for 11 robberies in Utah. Dustin Todd Byrd, 36, is in custody in Ada County, Idaho, for heroin trafficking and suspected of four recent bank robberies in Utah. Lastly, David Warren Evans faces sentencing for an armed robbery at Wells Fargo Bank on Sept. 26, 2013.
