BANGOR, Maine – A Wayne man was slapped with a 33-month prison sentence for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine into the U.S. and making false statements to a federal law enforcement agent.
A U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. handed down the sentence to Victor Sousa, 25, after he pleaded guilty to the drug charges on September 30, 2022, and to making false statements on December 5, 2023.
According to court records, Sousa crossed the U.S. border into Canada in July 2019, returning a few hours later. He was stopped for secondary inspection after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers observed him fidgeting with his pants. A search of his underwear uncovered 93 pills containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine weighing a total of 41.12 grams.
Sousa admitted to investigators that he had gone to Canada to purchase the pills. The incident marked the beginning of his downfall, as investigators later uncovered a web of deceit and lies.
In November 2022, while in jail awaiting sentencing on the drug charges, Sousa was questioned by a Task Force Officer with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regarding two subjects of a federal narcotics investigation. Sousa denied any knowledge of the subjects, but subsequent phone calls from his jail cell revealed a different story.
Court records show that Sousa had previously lived with one of the subjects and had been supplied with narcotics by the second subject in the past. The DEA investigated the case and ultimately caught Sousa in a web of lies. His sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of methamphetamine trafficking and the importance of honesty with law enforcement.
