Jordan Charles Opdahl, Receipt and Distribution of Child Pornography, South Dakota 2023

United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell revealed today that U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier has doled out a 12.5-year federal prison sentence to Jordan Charles Opdahl, a resident of Wentworth, South Dakota, for Receipt and Distribution of Child Pornography.

Opdahl, aged 30 at the time of sentencing, faced judicial retribution on February 3, 2023, following his conviction and guilty plea in November 2022. The charges stemmed from an October 20, 2020, incident where Opdahl exploited his Kik account to trade files depicting child pornography with other users.

The digital trail led authorities to uncover that Opdahl not only downloaded these files to his own cell phone but also disseminated them further within the Kik network. His predatory actions were halted when a federal grand jury indicted him in November 2021.

Investigation into this despicable act was spearheaded by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper led the prosecution, ensuring justice for the victims involved.

The case is a stark reminder of the Department of Justice’s dedication to Project Safe Childhood, an ongoing battle against the scourge of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Since 2006, this initiative has been at the forefront of identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting those who prey on children. Following his conviction, Opdahl was swiftly taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
