Wesley Cox, a 38-year-old man from New Castle, PA, has been brought to justice for his involvement in a cocaine distribution ring that spanned from 2017 to May 2019.
Cox, also known as Michael Deshawn Carter, pleaded guilty to two counts of violating federal narcotics laws before United States District Judge Marilyn J. Horan. The court was advised that Cox participated in a conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and 280 grams or more of cocaine base, commonly known as crack.
Assistant United States Attorneys Brendan T. Conway and Marnie Sheehan-Balchon are prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation that led to Cox’s prosecution was conducted by a federally administered Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), which is headed by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The OCDETF program provides critical federal funding and coordination that allows federal and state agencies to work together to identify, investigate, and prosecute major interstate and international drug trafficking organizations and other criminal enterprises. The Lawrence County Drug Task Force and the New Castle Police Department also participated in the investigation.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Cox faces a sentence of not less than 10 years in prison and up to life, a fine of $10,500,000, or both. Judge Horan scheduled sentencing for June 30, 2020 at 9:30AM.
The guilty plea marks a significant victory in the fight against cocaine trafficking in Pennsylvania. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement agencies in the state, who are working tirelessly to keep their communities safe.
The case highlights the importance of collaboration between federal and state agencies in combating major crimes. The OCDETF program has been instrumental in disrupting and dismantling drug trafficking organizations, and this case is a prime example of its success.
