KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– In a stunning turn of events, Robert Z. Whipple III, 50, from Crossville, Tennessee, was handed a 70-month prison sentence by Judge Katherine A. Crytzer in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Knoxville on February 10, 2023.
The plea agreement filed with the court revealed that Whipple pleaded guilty to three counts of bank robbery under 18 U.S.C. § 2113(a). Following his release, he will serve three years of supervised release and is compelled to pay restitution to the victims.
Whipple’s spree involved robbing Home Federal Bank, First Horizon Bank, and Fifth Third Bank, all located in West Knoxville within the Eastern District of Tennessee, from March 5 to March 7, 2020. He made off with approximately $6,950 in total. Whipple was caught at a Red Roof Inn hotel on the night of March 7, 2020. During the search of his room and vehicle, over $4,000 in cash and items used in the robberies, including a wig and demand note, were recovered.
The Knoxville Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) collaborated on the joint investigation that led to Whipple’s apprehension. FBI Special Agent Wesley Leatham was at the helm of this operation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney LaToyia Carpenter represented the United States during the sentencing process.
