GALVESTON, Texas – In a shocking turn of events, Whitney Rohacek, 26, of Crystal Beach, has been convicted of defrauding the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after the devastating effects of Hurricane Ike.
According to court documents, Rohacek submitted a false bill of sale for a travel trailer that contained a forged signature, as well as fraudulent title documents and receipts in order to obtain disaster assistance from FEMA.
The defendant was indicted on January 30, 2013, and faced up to 30 years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine during her sentencing hearing, set for August 18, 2013, before U.S. District Judge Gregg Costa.
Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Leuchtmann is prosecuting this case, which was the result of a thorough investigation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security – Office of Inspector General.
Rohacek was previously released on bond and permitted to remain on bond pending her sentencing hearing.
