Javondell R. Stallings, Tax Fraud, North Carolina 2019

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Javondell R. Stallings, 47, CEO of Step By Step Care, Inc., was dealt a serious blow to his career after being sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for tax fraud and failure to pay employment taxes. The sentence comes as a result of Stallings’ guilty plea on October 31, 2019, to one count of filing a false tax return under Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(1).

According to court documents, the Whitsett-based Step By Step Care has been providing behavioral healthcare and substance abuse treatment since 2005. However, it was revealed that on March 24, 2013, Stallings submitted a fraudulent personal income tax return for the year 2012.

The court found that during the period from the end of 2012 to the end of 2014, Stallings failed to pay employment taxes, which were deemed relevant conduct when determining his sentence. United States District Judge William L. Osteen, Jr., also ordered Stallings to serve one year of supervised release following his prison term and to pay $843,616 in restitution to the IRS.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), while Assistant U.S. Attorney Tanner Kroeger prosecuted it.
