Whooping Crane Poacher Nabbed in Jefferson County
A chilling crime has shaken the quiet streets of Beaumont, Texas. Trey Joseph Frederick, an 18-year-old local, has been arrested and charged with a federal crime that could land him in prison for up to six months and cost him a staggering $15,000 in fines.
According to court documents, on January 11, 2016, two whooping cranes were brutally shot on Blair Road in Jefferson County. The heinous act sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities quickly sprang into action to track down the culprit.
Further investigation revealed that Frederick had been seen in the area with a hunting rifle, claiming to be hunting geese. However, when federal agents contacted him at his home on LaBelle Road, he confessed to killing the cranes. Whooping cranes, a migratory bird species, are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, making it a federal offense to capture, kill, or attempt to capture or kill them in the United States.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement and Game Wardens with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are working together to bring Frederick to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph R. Batte is leading the prosecution.
