A 19-year-old Wichita man admitted in federal court Monday to storming F & K Liquor at gunpoint, attempting to rob the store in a violent heist that ended with him bleeding on the floor after the clerk opened fire. Rayquan Hill, of Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of robbery, confessing he and a co-defendant entered the store at 902 S. Woodlawn with plans to steal cash and alcohol by force.
Hill wasn’t walking out unscathed. As the robbery unfolded, the store clerk drew a firearm and shot Hill in the leg, stopping the assault cold. Blood pooled on the tile as Hill collapsed. Officers arrived within minutes and arrested him at the scene, still wounded and in pain. The weapon used in the robbery was recovered by police.
His accomplice, Jamaryus Moore, 20, also of Wichita, Kan., wasn’t caught at the scene. Instead, he went to work like nothing happened—until investigators tracked him down and took him into custody later that same day. Moore has already pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, though he wasn’t present when bullets flew.
The botched robbery triggered a joint investigation by the Wichita Police Department and the FBI, both of which moved fast to secure evidence and build a federal case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Smith prosecuted the case, pushing for accountability in what could have been a fatal encounter. U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister praised the swift action, calling the response “critical to keeping violent criminals off the streets.”
Hill now faces the full weight of federal justice. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 5 and could spend up to 20 years in federal prison. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000. There’s no plea deal that erases the image of him dragging himself from a robbery gone wrong, shot by a worker who refused to back down.
This case underscores the razor-thin edge of street crime—where greed meets consequence in seconds. F & K Liquor’s clerk didn’t hesitate. The law won’t either. With sentencing looming, Rayquan Hill has time to reflect on one hard truth: some robberies don’t pay. Some cost you everything.
