Karen D. Wilder, Embezzlement, Delaware 2024

WILMINGTON, Del. – The grim headlines of corruption have struck again as Karen D. Wilder and her husband Renwick L. Davis have been caught red-handed in a $600,000 embezzlement scandal. Both were employees of the Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIMH) when they pleaded guilty to stealing federal funds meant for aiding Delaware’s most vulnerable citizens.

According to U.S. Attorney Julianne E. Murray, Wilder, 39, and Davis, 49, confessed to embezzling the substantial sum over a period of two years, from December 2021 to November 2023. Their alleged scheme was deplorable; Wilder, as Executive Director, and Davis, as Case Manager, misappropriated funds intended for essential services such as emergency housing assistance and medical care during the Covid-19 crisis.

Instead of aiding those in need, they funneled the money into their personal accounts. The duo’s lavish lifestyle was fueled by luxury goods, shopping sprees, and travel expenses, all at the expense of Delaware’s homeless and at-risk population. Wilder even used DIMH funds to pay her mortgage.

Murray minced no words, stating that the defendants had “abused the trust of their positions” and caused a profound injustice. Special Agent in Charge Shawn Rice echoed this sentiment, emphasizing HUD OIG’s dedication to safeguarding public funds and ensuring justice for victims of such corruption.

William J. DelBagno, FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge, made it clear that the FBI will not tolerate those who betray the public trust, no matter how high their position. The couple is facing serious charges, with Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. LaRosa leading the prosecution.

This joint investigation by HUD-OIG and FBI Baltimore’s Wilmington Resident Agency has sent a stark reminder that public corruption will not be tolerated in Delaware.
