Sanford Man Lands in Hot Water for Firearm Possession
A Sanford man, William Klingensmith, 47, has been sentenced to one month in prison for unlawful firearm possession. The guilty verdict was handed down in U.S. District Court by Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr., on February 20, 2015, and July 11, 2015, Klingensmith possessed a total of eleven firearms at different times, according to court records.
On June 13, 2015, Klingensmith used a 9 mm rifle and a Colt 38 revolver for target shooting at a range in Fairfield. Seven days later, officers found nine more firearms, consisting of rifles and shotguns, hanging on the wall of Klingensmith’s former residence in Waterville.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Waterville, Maine, Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jody Mullis represented the government in the case.
U.S. Attorney Richard W. Murphy announced the sentence, stating that Klingensmith pleaded guilty on August 4, 2016. Judge Woodcock also took into consideration Klingensmith’s prior misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence when imposing the sentence, stating that Klingensmith would have “no firearms for Mr. Klingensmith forever.”
The firearm charges against Klingensmith stem from his possession of multiple firearms between February 20, 2015, and July 11, 2015. His one-month prison sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release.
Klingensmith’s case serves as a reminder of the harsh consequences of firearm charges in Maine. The U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to work towards keeping Maine communities safe from firearm-related crimes.
