William N. L’E Europa, Tax Evasion, Rhode Island 2025

A local businessman has been convicted for a second time on tax charges, with a Rhode Island judge set to determine his sentence in November.

William N. L’E Europa, 60, of Cranston, pleaded guilty to tax evasion in Providence Federal Court yesterday, admitting to failing to pay $1,367,336.08 in taxes, penalties, fees, and interest owed to the IRS dating back to tax years 2007 – 2013.

Under the terms of a plea agreement filed with the court, L’E Europa is required to pay $1,367,336.08 in restitution to the IRS no later than the date of sentencing in this matter, set for November 12, 2025.

This is L’E Europa’s second conviction on tax charges, after a conviction in 2012 on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and filing a false tax return. He and a business partner underreported business receipts for tax years 2007-2010, resulting in the underpayment of federal taxes to the Internal Revenue Service of more than $500,000.

L’E Europa was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison and ordered to file accurate, amended federal tax returns for tax years 2007 – 2011, and to pay all taxes due the IRS following his first conviction.

According to court documents, L’E Europa submitted false documentation to the IRS in March 2019, indicating that he had little or no income. He also signed an Offer in Compromise to lower his liability for taxes owed for calendar years 2007-2013, knowing that he was understating his actual personal income.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Milind M. Shah, and was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation and the FBI.
