Wastewater Hauler Pleads Guilty in Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson, MS – William Roberts, 44, of Pearl, Mississippi, has pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in Jackson, Mississippi.

According to court documents, Roberts supervised the transportation and disposal of industrial waste from Gold Coast Commodities, Inc., of Brandon, Mississippi, to a site at a commercial entity in Jackson, which resulted in the waste being trucked and hauled to a facility that was not a legal discharge point designated by the Jackson Wastewater Treatment System to receive the waste.

Robersts’ negligence led to the discharge of millions of gallons of untreated industrial waste into the Jackson water system, causing harm to the environment and potentially posing health risks to residents.

The case was investigated by the Environmental Protection Agency, Criminal Investigation Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Brandon Police Department, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, with cooperation from City of Brandon and City of Jackson municipal governments.

Roberts is scheduled to be sentenced on December 14, 2022, at 2:30 p.m. before a federal judge who will determine his sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that they will continue to vigorously investigate and prosecute those who deliberately violate the nation’s environmental laws.

Robersts’ guilty plea is a significant step towards holding him accountable for his actions, and it serves as a reminder that violating environmental laws can have severe consequences.
