SYRACUSE, NEW YORK – A shocking case of government property theft has come to light as a Massachusetts man stands accused of stealing over $30,000 worth of postage stamps using fraudulent checks. William Soto, a 32-year-old Springfield resident, was arraigned on a federal indictment yesterday, charging him with twelve counts of theft of government property.
According to the indictment, Soto used fraudulent checks to purchase the stolen postage stamps over the course of two days in August 2023. The counties affected by Soto’s scheme include Oneida County, Oswego County, and Onondaga County. United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge of the Boston Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), announced the indictment.
The charges filed against Soto carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to three years. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute the defendant is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.
The USPIS is investigating the case with the help of the Fulton Police Department and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Tuck is prosecuting the case. While Soto has been indicted, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
As authorities continue to investigate Soto’s scheme, the Grimy Times will provide updates on this developing story. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of combating government property theft and the severe consequences that come with it.
The indictment against Soto highlights the need for vigilance in protecting government property and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
