William Willard Miner, Tampering with a Victim or Witness, South Dakota 2016

Eagle Butte Man Sentenced for Tampering with a Victim or Witness

On June 6, 2016, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced William Willard Miner, age 57, to a year and a day in custody for tampering with a victim or witness.

Miner, a resident of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was found guilty of threatening a victim at a residence in the White Horse Community. This incident occurred on June 13, 2015, and was part of a larger case involving Sage Miner, who assaulted the victim in a separate federal matter.

Sage Miner, the relative of William Miner, was sentenced to one year and a day in custody for the assault. The two cases were investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller.

The incident in question occurred when Miner returned from a trip to Mobridge with another friend, where they had gone to purchase more alcohol. Upon their return, Miner walked up to the victim and threatened him, putting the victim in fear for his safety.

As a result of Miner’s actions, he was sentenced to a year and a day in custody, followed by 18 months of supervised release, and a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Miner was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The case against Miner serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting victims and witnesses in the justice system. It also highlights the consequences of tampering with a victim or witness, which can have serious repercussions for those involved.
