ST. GEORGE – In a significant victory for federal law enforcement, William Henry Woods, 38, of Tennessee, has been sentenced to up to ten years in federal prison after being convicted on a firearm charge. Woods was caught with a stolen Sig Sauer P938 9mm pistol during a traffic stop that also revealed counterfeit currency.
The saga began when Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped Woods for a traffic violation in Washington City, Utah. The driver, identified as Woods, initially provided an ID with a photo that did not match him. He fled the scene and was apprehended after a brief pursuit. During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered the loaded pistol, reported stolen from Memphis, TN. They also found around $42 in counterfeit currency.
Woods had been on federal supervised release in Tennessee following a 10-year prison sentence for another firearms violation. In court documents, U.S. Attorney John W. Huber emphasized the importance of federal firearms laws in combating violent crime and protecting communities like Utah’s.
The case was investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and FBI special agents, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys in St. George prosecuting it. Woods pleaded guilty on March 27, and sentencing followed on August 7 before U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart.
Woods’ conviction is one of 15 firearms cases filed by federal prosecutors in the St. George area this year. Many defendants have prior felony convictions and charges involving drugs or other federal law violations, highlighting the comprehensive approach to combatting crime in the region.
