SALT LAKE CITY – The grim narrative of a local drug distribution case deepened as 22-year-old Edward Lee Poorman, from Vineyard, UT, stands accused in federal court of distributing heroin that led to a fatal overdose.
According to charges filed Thursday, Poorman is scheduled for an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul M. Warner next Monday, facing one count of distribution of heroin.
The events unfolded on July 6, 2016, when Provo City police officers responded to a harrowing call. A woman, referred to as BW in court documents, was found unresponsive at her residence. Despite emergency medical efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Toxicology results revealed a deadly cocktail of methamphetamine and heroin-derived morphine in BW’s system.
Provo detectives uncovered evidence linking Poorman to the distribution of the fateful drugs. They discovered messages on BW’s Facebook account indicating a multiple-day conversation with Poorman about purchasing drugs, which culminated in their meeting on July 5, 2016. Poorman admitted in an interview that he helped BW secure heroin for personal use.
Poorman’s potential penalty for distribution of heroin is severe – up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million. As the case unfolds, the grim realities of drug trafficking and its deadly consequences are laid bare before the court.
Complaints are not findings of guilt. Edward Lee Poorman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
