Newark, NJ – A Gloucester County man has admitted to committing a brazen crime that cheated the system out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in unemployment insurance benefits.
Willie Carter, 23, of Paulsboro, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to wire fraud on a date that was not specified in the press release. According to documents filed in the case and statements made in court, Carter submitted fraudulent unemployment insurance benefit applications to various states from July 2020 to October 2020.
These applications resulted in Carter falsely obtaining more than $400,000 in unemployment insurance benefits. The charge of wire fraud is punishable by a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of the greater of $250,000, twice the gross profits to Carter or twice the gross loss suffered by the victims, whichever is greatest.
The case against Carter was investigated by special agents of the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, postal inspectors with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Newark, special agents of the FBI, and special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General.
Carter is scheduled to be sentenced on March 14, 2023. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Kogan of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Cybercrime Unit in Newark.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office released a statement saying, ‘This case highlights the importance of protecting the integrity of our unemployment insurance system and holding those who seek to cheat the system accountable for their actions.’
