Curtis Lee Moran, Threatening VA Employees, North Dakota 2024

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Curtis Lee Moran, a 41-year-old from Williston, ND, has been sentenced to 12 months in federal prison and 3 years of supervised release for making chilling threats against Department of Veterans Affairs employees. The court found Moran guilty of Threatening Interstate Communications, as outlined in 18 U.S.C. § 875(c).

Moran’s spree of terror began on June 14, 2022, when he made a harrowing call to the White House VA Call Center, vowing to kill his physician. His malevolence didn’t stop there; the same day, he left threatening messages at the Fargo VA Medical Center, declaring intentions to stab and harm doctors there.

The next day, Moran’s threats escalated further as he called the Fargo VA Medical Center again, this time leaving a message that he intended to shoot up the hospital. On June 16, 2022, law enforcement moved swiftly to arrest him, ordering his detention until his case was resolved.

Special Agent in Charge Gregory Billingsley of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General’s Central Field Office emphasized the importance of safety for VA personnel and veterans. ‘VA personnel and the veterans they serve should feel safe while working and receiving care within VA facilities,’ said Billingsley. The VA OIG is committed to identifying and stopping threats to VA employees and operations.

This case was a collaborative effort, investigated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs- Office of Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan J. O’Konek. Moran pleaded guilty to Threatening Interstate Communications on November 3, 2022.
