A brazen bank robbery shook the quiet streets of Boston as two masked individuals stormed into a Hingham Institute for Savings branch on October 9th, 2015, leaving a trail of fear and destruction in their wake.
The robbers, Russell Dinovo, 52, and Anthony Pantone, donned hooded sweatshirts, with portions of their faces visible, as they entered the bank. Dinovo vaulted the teller counter, forcing open two tellers’ cash drawers, and grabbed a duffel bag, which he stuffed with stolen cash. He then demanded that a bank employee open the vault, and Dinovo removed more money from the vault.
Pantone, the accomplice, remained at the counter, brandishing what appeared to be a handgun, as the duo stole $16,320 from the bank. The two robbers fled on foot but were captured a short time later in a cab, where they were found with the duffel bag containing $16,320 and an airsoft gun.
Russell Dinovo pleaded guilty to one count of armed bank robbery before U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns. His sentencing is scheduled for March 7, 2018, where he faces a sentence of no greater than 25 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
Pantone, Dinovo’s accomplice, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced in August 2016 to 78 months in prison.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division, with the assistance of Acting United States Attorney William Weinreb and Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit.
The guilty plea brings a sense of closure to the victims and the community, but it also serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of bank robberies on innocent lives.
