Omaha, NE – In a brutal act of domestic violence on the Winnebago Indian Reservation, 21-year-old Seth J. Lopez of Winnebago, Nebraska, has been handed a 30-month federal prison sentence for strangulation of an intimate partner.

The horror unfolded on December 7, 2022, when a Native American woman was attacked by Lopez after she tried to leave his residence. The victim was accompanied by a witness who witnessed the entire incident and helped her gather her belongings. According to court documents, Lopez threw the victim onto the bed, strangling her by placing both hands around her neck. When the witness yelled at him to stop, Lopez released his grip, allowing the woman to escape.

The investigation into this heinous crime was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has law enforcement jurisdiction for felony offenses on reservations in the District of Nebraska. After a thorough investigation, the DOJ USAO filed charges against Lopez, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentence.

Upon his release from prison, Lopez will be subject to a 3-year term of supervised release, marking the end of this tragic chapter in Winnebago’s history.
