Woman Caught Lying on Gun Purchase Forms
A 41-year-old woman from Pray, MT, has been sentenced to 5 years of probation and 250 hours of community service for lying on firearms purchase forms. Heather L. Welker, formerly of Clearfield, Pa., pleaded guilty in federal court in Johnstown, Pa., to charges of false statement to a federally licensed firearms dealer.
According to Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song, Welker purchased a number of firearms from Grice Gun Shop, a federally licensed firearms dealer, between January 28, 2015, and March 26, 2015. However, she stated she was purchasing the firearms for herself when, in truth, she was not the actual buyer and was purchasing the firearms on behalf of another person.
Welker’s guilty plea was entered before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr., prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. Ms. Song commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Welker.
The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and communities to prevent, deter and prosecute gun crime. This program aims to reduce gun violence and make communities safer.
Welker’s sentence reflects the seriousness of her crime and the importance of honesty in firearms transactions. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will continue to work tirelessly to prevent gun crime and ensure that those who break the law are held accountable.
