A local woman has been charged with a serious crime after allegedly assaulting a federal officer in McLaughlin, South Dakota. According to authorities, Rhonda Brown, 41, was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 17, 2013, for Assaulting, Resisting and Impeding a Federal Officer.
A federal grand jury is a group of citizens who hear evidence and decide whether a person should be charged with a crime. In this case, the grand jury found enough evidence to charge Brown with the crime. She was then brought before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on July 26, 2013, and entered a plea of not guilty to the indictment.
The penalty for this crime is severe. If convicted, Brown faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both; three years of supervised release, an additional two years of supervised release upon revocation; and a mandatory $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court may also order restitution.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is leading the investigation into the alleged assault. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. Brown was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after her court appearance.
The charge against Brown is just an accusation, and she is considered innocent until proven guilty. A trial date has not been set yet, and it’s unclear when the case will go to court.
The alleged assault on the federal officer was a serious incident, and the consequences for Brown could be severe if she is found guilty. The community is likely to be watching this case closely as it unfolds.
The investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing, and it’s not clear what led up to the incident. However, the fact that a federal grand jury was convened and Brown was indicted suggests that the evidence against her is strong.
