PORTLAND, Ore.—In a shocking turn of events, Melanie Breeanne Rivas, 25, from Happy Valley, Oregon, faced her first appearance in federal court today, charged with Assault on a Federal Officer. The incident unfolded during a traffic stop when Rivas allegedly punched an FPS officer in the face.
According to court documents, the October 29, 2025, encounter began when an FPS officer noticed Rivas’ vehicle repeatedly maneuvering towards his patrol car and flipping him off. The situation escalated as Rivas cut off the officer multiple times and slammed on her brakes for over four miles. Despite the officer’s attempts to change lanes, Rivas continued to block his path.
After initiating a traffic stop, the officer ordered Rivas to exit the vehicle. Instead of complying, she reached for items in her center console. When Rivas finally stepped out, she defied further instructions. In a violent confrontation, she reportedly punched the officer, leading to charges against her.
Rivas appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge today and was ordered released pending further court proceedings. The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is currently investigating the case, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office taking charge of prosecution. A criminal complaint serves as an accusation, and Rivas is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
With this incident casting a grim light on Happy Valley’s streets, residents are left questioning the safety of their community and the escalating nature of roadside confrontations with law enforcement. As the investigation unfolds, one thing remains certain: Melanie Breeanne Rivas will face serious charges for her alleged actions.
