Porcupine Woman Sentenced for Assault
A disturbing case of child abuse has come to light in Porcupine, South Dakota. In August 2013, 24-year-old Cheryl Lynn Cross committed a heinous act, punching and scratching a minor child in the face.
The incident sparked a thorough investigation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Their hard work led to Cross’s conviction for Assault by Striking, Beating or Wounding.
On August 4, 2014, U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy handed down a sentence that reflects the severity of the crime. Cross was given 1 year of probation, a sentence that is likely a welcome relief for the victim and their loved ones.
However, the punishment doesn’t stop there. In addition to her probation, Cross was ordered to pay a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. This money will go towards supporting victims of crime and helping them heal.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins, who worked tirelessly to ensure that justice was served. Her efforts are a testament to the commitment of law enforcement officials to protect vulnerable members of our society.
