Woman Guilty of Snooping into Student Loan Files
A shocking case of government corruption has come to light in Illinois, where a 46-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to illegally accessing confidential student loan files.
Charlotte M. Robinson, of Dolton, Illinois, admitted to accessing the National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS) between April 2006 and May 2009, violating the Privacy Act of 1974 and Department of Education policies.
According to court documents, Robinson, a full-time employee in the Federal Student Aid (FSA) Division of the Department of Education, used her position to snoop into the student loan records of numerous individuals, including musicians, actors, family members, friends, and other people.
In her guilty plea, Robinson admitted that she had no official government reason to access these records and that her sole purpose was idle curiosity.
The unauthorized access took place over a period of three years, with Robinson logging into NSLDS hundreds of times. The records she accessed included sensitive information such as borrowers’ full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, loan balances, and places of enrollment.
The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Eric G. Olshan of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section, with the Department of Education Office of Inspector General leading the investigation.
Robinson is set to be sentenced on February 22, 2011, and faces the consequences of her actions. The guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting sensitive information and the consequences of violating federal laws and regulations.
